It’s Working!

August 15th, 2008

The animation is going swimmingly! The last two weeks have been spent planning and blocking a 50 second sequence, which is turning out really well.

My planning involves watching films (specific scenes that relate to what I’m doing, not the whole popcorn affair), videoing myself acting (Academy Award winning performances, of course), and sketching poses and expressions that might have potential. When I feel I have a solid picture of what I want, I move on to blocking. This involves moving the characters into the most essential “story” poses and positioning the camera in ways that best suit the action.

While based on the animatic, the planning and blocking process produced notable changes in this sequence. Some shots just weren’t working, so I kept trying new actions, timing, and camera angles until, finally, I played it back and it “clicked”. As rough as it was, I could see what this was going to become once fully animated, and it was exciting. Now it was time to get some feedback from my peers and mentors. I was nervous, but quietly confident that what I had created was going to work... and it did...

I got the thumbs up from all! So, I’m pleased to announce that I have set myself up with a clear direction, and will spend the next 2-3 weeks completing the animation for this sequence...
